Detail View in Revit
Learn how to detail a specific region of your project
A detail view is a magnification of any other view in the project (with the exception of 3D views - learn more about this in our article on the exploded 3D view step by step). As the name suggests, this type of view is meant to show a specific region of your project in greater detail. In most cases, you will set your floor plan, ceiling plan, section, and elevation views to use a medium or low level of detail, due to the scale at which they will be printed. For detail views, you will probably choose the high level of detail option, so that objects appear with their line weights and hatching configured for that purpose. In detail views, it's quite common to need tools from the Annotate tab to create drawing elements that were not built into the 3D model (because otherwise they would make the model too heavy, for example). It's very important to remember that a detail view is a view like any other in Revit, so if you move an object or delete an element of your model from this view, that change will be reflected in all the other views of your project (To avoid accidentally selecting an object, it's a good idea to use the selection filter).
How to create a detail view
From a floor plan, ceiling plan, elevation, or section view, go to the View tab; in the Create panel, click Callout View.

Click where you want to start marking the detail view; move the cursor and click where you want to end the magnification. Notice that the area to be enlarged has been marked and that an indicator (containing the detail number) has been inserted at an arbitrary position.

To change the position of the indicator:
Click on the line that connects the indicator to the marked area. Notice that two controls appear, looking like blue circles;

Click and drag the control closest to the indicator to move it;
If you want the indicator line to have an elbow-shaped break, click and drag the control farthest from the indicator.
The area around the boundary of the region, marked with a dotted line, is the area reserved for placing dimensions, text, tags, as well as any other element that will describe or characterize the elements of the detail view. Outside the boundaries of the dashed region, these dimensions, text, and tags will not be displayed, if any.
