Lately, the term BIM has become more and more common in the daily lives of construction industry professionals. Inside offices, in universities, at meetings, in bar conversations, there's always someone talking about the subject, which really is the topic of the moment. As happens with any novelty, there's a lot of excitement and curiosity, which naturally coexist with a feeling of fear of change.
In the talk Everything you always wanted to know about BIM, but had no one to ask, the architect and director of EBBIM, João Gaspar, presented the subject of BIM in an uncomplicated way, with the goal of showing how and why the construction industry's production process is changing, and what to do to take part in that change. The presentation aims to clarify the following points:
- But after all, what does BIM mean?
- What is the life cycle of a project developed in a BIM system
- Who are the players and what are their roles in a BIM-based workflow
- The use of the IFC format to exchange data between the project's disciplines, for construction coordination and building maintenance
- How the use of BIM can change professional responsibilities, hiring practices, and project delivery standards

About the speaker
João Gaspar is an architect, graduated from FAU-USP in 1999, and gives numerous talks on BIM, technology, and the use of computing for architecture, engineering, and design. He has more than 16 years of experience in teaching, research, and the creation of educational materials, leading EBBIM (a training center specialized in BIM) and ProBooks Editora, both headquartered in São Paulo.
In the past year (2015), among João Gaspar's various professional and research activities, notable highlights include the launch of the book Revit step by step - volume I, the publication of papers at major conferences such as CIBW78 2015 (Eindhoven, Netherlands) and TIC 2015 (Recife), as well as being an invited speaker for the round table "BIM and Education" at SIGraDI 2015 (Florianópolis) and signing a technical cooperation agreement on BIM processes with the Planning Secretariat of the State Government of Santa Catarina.
EBBIM, in operation since 2000, offered more than 20 at the time training courses, notably including Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Rhino, SketchUp, Microstation, and DProfiler. EBBIM was an authorized training center at the time for Bentley, McNeel, and BeckTECH.
