Get to know FreeCAD, free and open-source software for BIM modeling
freecad Get to know FreeCAD In this presentation, architect Yorik van Havre aims to give a quick overview of the different free tools available to architects and other designers, and to focus on one of the solutions best suited for working with BIM: FreeCAD. There will be a general presentation of FreeCAD, and a demonstration of its Arch workbench, which contains the BIM tools, as well as the construction of a valid IFC model exportable to other BIM applications, and the extraction of plans and sections, which can be saved in DWG format. We will also talk about the general philosophy of free software, explaining how it is fundamentally different from the free applications we know as “freeware,” and why it goes far beyond just being free of charge. Our talks count as complementary activities in undergraduate architecture, engineering, and design courses. The presentation will take place on May 24, Tuesday, at 7 PM, at TI Lab, and will be streamed live online. The event is free, but spots are limited! Biography Yorik is an architect, a member of the uncreated.net collective, and one of the main developers of the FreeCAD project since 2008. He is Belgian, and has lived and worked in São Paulo for 10 years. He started working on and contributing to free software around that same time. He has given several talks around the world about FreeCAD, free software, and architecture. You can follow his work via his website ortwitter.
