Solid Operations

The types of solids generated by Vectorworks (extrusions, sweeps, and 3D volumes) are the most basic way to create objects. To create more complex 3D objects (with holes or compositions of different volumes, for example), there are commands that combine these solids using processes known as addition, subtraction, and intersection.
how to add solids
Select two or more objects with the Selection (Selection) tool X (figure 1). Remember that these objects must overlap in at least one section.

Go to the menu Model/Add Solids (Model/Add Solids) Ctrl+Alt+A (figure 2).

Notice that the objects have become a single one (figure 3).

how to subtract solids
Select two or more objects with the Selection (Selection) tool X (figure 4). Remember that these objects must overlap in at least one section.

Go to the menu Model/Subtract Solids... (Model/Subtract Solids...) Ctrl+Alt+S (figure 5).

In the window that opens, use the arrows to choose which volume will be subtracted, then click OK. Notice that the objects have become a single one (figure 6).

create a solid by intersection
Select two or more objects with the Selection (Selection) tool X (figure 7). Remember that these objects must overlap in at least one section.

Go to the menu Model/Intersect Solids (Model/Intersect Solids) Ctrl+Alt+I (figure 8).

Notice that a new object was created from the two volumes (figure 9).

how to section solids
Select the solid or surface to be sectioned and the cutting surface (figure 10).

Go to the menu Model/Section Solids... (Model/Section Solids...) Ctrl+Alt+T (figure 11).

In the window that opens, use the arrows to choose the object to be used as the cutting surface. Click OK and see the result (figure 12).

NOTE 1 After the section has been made, you can reverse the side that was sectioned. To do this, select the object and click the Reverse Section Side (Reverse Section Side) button in the Object Info (Object Info) palette Ctrl+I.
NOTE 2 To create a curved surface like the one seen in the images above (figures 10 and 12), you can use the Polyline (Polyline) tool, leave the object without fill, and then use the Extrude (Extrude) command.
