The First Meeting - Part IV - Survey of Academic Output on BIM at ENTAC 2014

The idea of doing a statistical survey to understand how the academic output on BIM at ENTAC 2014 relates to the total output presented at the event was born from observing a slide in professor Arto Kiviniemi's presentation, during ENTAC 2014 itself. It's a chart in which Brazil appears to have 7% of its publications (within the AEC scope) related to BIM. Besides being curious to check whether we would find a similar rate within ENTAC 2014, I also had the idea of researching other information on the topic, which I share in this post, as I promised in the first article of this series. The data supporting the information shared below was extracted and compiled from the document "XV Encontro Nacional de Tecnologia do Ambiente Construído: Avanços no desempenho das construções - pesquisa, inovação e capacitação profissional", available for free download on the event's website. To complete this extensive task, I had the help of architect Alexandre Villares, my partner at TI Lab, and architect Nashalyn Casagrande, who also works at TI Lab. I hope this information, organized the way we did it, can serve as a reference for everyone interested in the topic of BIM and how it fits within our academic output, using ENTAC 2014 as a reference. The survey was organized into 8 sections:

As you can see, we found BIM-related terms in 4% of the titles and in 4% of the keywords. In the body text, we found "BIM terms" in 6% of the papers, a rate very close to the one cited by prof. Kiviniemi. The terms searched for were: BIM, Building Information Modeling, Parametric modeling, Building information modeling, ICT, Information Technology in Construction, Integrated Project Delivery, Revit, ArchiCAD, level of detail, and level of maturity.
Section 2 - What is the distribution, by TOPIC, of papers containing terms related to BIM? Since ENTAC 2014 used 11 Topics to organize the papers, we used the same categorization to find out in which Topics there are papers with BIM-related terms in the body text, and which Topic has the highest concentration of papers with "BIM terms" (Table 2). The Topic "Information and communication technology" accounted for 50% of all papers with BIM terms at ENTAC 2014. In 7 topics, no BIM-related papers were found.

Section 3 - What percentage of papers contain terms related to BIM, within each TOPIC? Within the four Topics that contain BIM-related papers, we decided to look at the percentage of papers with BIM terms in each of them, as shown in Table 3. Note that, within the Information and Communication Technology Topic, 61% of the papers reference BIM. In the other topics, the rate ranges between 9% and 10%.

Section 4 - Distribution, by state, of researchers who contributed to BIM-related papers Papers with BIM terms were written by researchers affiliated with universities in 9 Brazilian states (Ceará, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Sergipe, and São Paulo), plus one foreign institution. Neither the Federal District nor the other 18 Brazilian states had BIM-related papers at ENTAC 2014, as can be seen in Table 4. It's important to note that, when building the table, we used the criterion that each contribution (even if from the same author) to each paper is counted as a value of 1. So, a researcher who contributed to 3 papers, for example, was counted 3 times for the state where they hold an academic affiliation.

Section 5 - Distribution, by University, of researchers who contributed to BIM-related papers The researchers who published papers with BIM terms are affiliated with 15 Brazilian universities and one foreign university (Table 5). Among the Brazilian ones, USP has the largest share of affiliated authors (17%), followed by UNICAMP and UFRGS. Still among the Brazilian institutions, UPM (Mackenzie) is the only private institution that appears on the list. The foreign institution is the University of Huddersfield, located in England. As with the previous table, when building this table we used the criterion that each contribution (even if from the same author) to each paper is counted as a value of 1. So, a researcher who contributed to 3 papers, for example, was counted 3 times for the university where they hold an academic affiliation.

Section 6 - Collaboration between researchers on the same BIM paper affiliated with one or more universities At this stage of the research, we decided to look into how many papers with BIM terms were written by collaborators from the same university, and how many were written by partners affiliated with different universities, as shown in Table 6. We found only 3 partnerships: one between USP-UFPE researchers, another between USP-UEL, and the third between UFRGS-HUD(UK). The other papers were produced by researchers from the same university.

Section 7 - List of keywords found in all BIM-related papers After using our own list of terms to find BIM-related papers, we realized it would be interesting to list which keywords were used by the researchers, in general, in papers with BIM terms (Table 7). This way it's possible to get an idea of how BIM relates to other subjects within the output presented by ENTAC 2014 researchers.
Section 8 - Researchers who took part in publishing BIM-related papers at ENTAC 2014 Finally, we put together a table listing all the researchers who collaborated in producing the BIM-related papers at ENTAC 2014. The list is sorted by researchers with the most contributions, and beyond that there is no further sorting criterion, not even alphabetical. Professors Eduardo Toledo dos Santos and Silvio Melhado, from USP, appear with 3 contributions each; Regina Ruschel, from UNICAMP, and Carlos Torres Formoso, from UFRGS, took part in 2 papers each. The rest participated in one paper each, as can be seen in Table 8. A total of 59 researchers collaborated on BIM-related papers at ENTAC 2014.
I want to make clear that the information about the researchers' names is public and available elsewhere on the internet (such as, for example, on the ENTAC 2014 website), besides this site; in any case, if you appear on this list and don't want your name on it, just get in touch with me and I'll remove it. Well, with this article, I'm closing out the series of posts about ENTAC 2014. The intention is to produce, if possible, other reports like this one at other major Brazilian academic events, so we can know how the topic of BIM is developing within Brazilian academia.

Section 1 - What percentage of papers contain terms related to BIM? To answer this question, a search was carried out using several terms we believe are related to BIM. The terms were searched for in the papers' titles, among the keywords, and in the body text itself. The results can be seen in Table 1. As you can see, we found BIM-related terms in 4% of the titles and in 4% of the keywords. In the body text, we found "BIM terms" in 6% of the papers, a rate very close to the one cited by prof.
