From CAAD to BIM: 45 years of applied computing in the AECO sector

Talk will be given by architect João Gaspar at a free event organized by the DOMVS laboratory, of FAU - UFJF, on October 16, 2019.

ABOUT THE TALK

The publication of "Through the looking glass: why no wonderland", in 1974, by architect Charles Eastman, can be considered a milestone in the history of computing applied to Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations, the sector of the economy identified by the acronym AECO. At the time, Eastman developed a computational system for architectural design, that is, a system based on the premises of a theoretical model identified as Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). About 30 years later, the terms Building Information Model, Building Information Modeling, and the acronym BIM began to be widely used by academia and industry. The meaning attributed to Building Information Modeling in an Autodesk whitepaper, in 2002, is very similar to the one Eastman gave to CAAD, in 1974.
Years later, definitions attributed to Building Information Modeling by Eastman et al. (2008), Succar (2009), and Succar and Kassem (2015) became widely adopted, giving the term meanings that differ from the one attributed by Autodesk (2002).

• So, besides CAAD, were there other terms and acronyms that gave rise to the term Building Information Modeling?
• If so, how many are there and what are they? Who were the first to use such terms? When did these events occur? What meanings were attributed to these terms?
• Would it be possible to trace a timeline? And a "family tree"? Would it be possible to contextualize the terms that emerge (and disappear) alongside events related to the history of technology?
• Regarding Building Information Model and Building Information Modeling, what meanings have been attributed to these terms? Would it be possible to group these definitions to identify trends in how academia understands the meaning of Building Information Modeling?
• For the AECO sector, has only the term Building Information Modeling been used, or are other terms also in use? What are they?

These topics will be addressed in the talk "From CAAD to BIM: 45 years of applied computing in the AECO sector", which presents a summary of the results of architect João Gaspar's master's research, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Regina Ruschel, in August 2019, at UNICAMP.
