Challenges for BIM Implementation in Brazilian Firms

For quite some time now, a good portion of architects, engineers, and other professionals in the construction industry have been aware of the benefits of working with BIM systems and processes. Talks, seminars, and panel discussions are common, where all (or nearly all) participants leave convinced that, yes, it's time to change. So far, though, few firms have started implementing BIM in their daily workflow; even fewer are the companies that are succeeding at it. Among the various causes that can lead to failure in BIM implementation, the difficulty of learning the new software is commonly pointed to as the main barrier. Other important issues, related to team engagement and motivation, problems with internal communication within companies, among others, are often left aside. The idea behind this presentation is to show that successful BIM implementation goes far beyond learning the software, and that the companies that achieve this goal are the ones that manage to firmly embed BIM into their culture. Our talks count as complementary activities in undergraduate architecture, engineering, and design courses. João Gaspar – Architect graduated from FAU-USP in 1999, gives numerous talks on BIM, technology, and the use of computing for architecture, engineering, and design.
